Mom Life Rocks

Moms unite! My entire life, I’ve always wanted to “be a mom.” Dreams do come true! Taking care of my 3 little people in the pearl and enjoying this awesome community is full of fun adventures. IMG_7288Walking home from lunch and wearing trucker hats. Calling all moms, single, married, dog moms and even moms of cats.  There is so much funny to share while being a mom. Before I had kids, I had a really strong vision of what kind of mom I would be. It’s a bit of a blend of how I think I turned out as a mom and always evolving.

One of my favorite parts of being a mom is connecting with other moms. Like all other people, moms are their own breed and it’s fun to find “our kind of moms.” The real moms, the ones that are funny and honest and get the wild juggling act of being a mom. It is a new adventure every.single.day.

From the questions, to the snuggles to the daily adventures being a mom to Kai, Blaize and Pepper is the best thing I’ve ever done!

Here’s to all the mom’s out there and all that we do to play with and take care of our little people!

Kids Club At the Gym Is A Family Favorite

I hear a lot from other parents how their kids won’t go to kids club at the gym. I’m lucky because I have 3 little kids who love going to kids club at the gym. I’ve been a gym rat for as long as I can remember. When I was pregnant, I thought “wow I don’t know if I’ll feel comfortable bringing baby Kai to kids club as a 6month old baby? Who would hold him? Would they love him and hold him if he started crying? What if he pooped while I was teaching?

I was a spin instructor for 16 years and even taught while I was pregnant with Kai. Much like everything else, your ideas change once you actually have a baby. I remember counting down the days until I could bring baby Kai with me (must be 6 months old) to kids club while I taught spin classes. I jumped on that spin bike 2 weeks after my c-section with Kai. I started teaching spin classes 30 days after he was born. And it was not too soon for me. 🙂 By the time baby Kai was 6 months old, I was knocking down the door at kids club. Sure, I had to power feed him right before class to keep him happy. And had to eat a balance bar during class to keep my energy high to make it through but I did it.

Happy Mama! Posing post spin class before I raced downstairs to pickup 6 month old baby Kai from kids club.

IMG_5395Fast forward 6 years later and I have 3 little people who wiggle down to the gym with me all the time. Blaize and Pepper have been saying since they were 3 years old, “mommy needs to workout so she can be healthy.” Mimi (my mom) taught my kids that mantra with lots of pep talks. Mimi talked about the importance of going to the kids club so moms can be healthy and strong. Thanks to mimi for being an inspiration and helping me teach my kids that kids club is awesome!

Me and baby Kai

Bottom line, getting to the gym everyday with 3 little kids in tow can feel like so much work! Do I feel like going to the gym to workout? No, not usually. Do I feel like going to the gym to workout with 3 little people that ask 10 questions a minute? No, not really. But, like Mimi always said it will feel so good after you’re done and be worth it. And it is, every single time!IMG_3100Sometimes you get really lucky and adorable identical twin caretakers are at kids club! I told Blaize and Pepper that you guys will be best friends when you’re 21 like these identical twin girls.

Mamas, keep rocking the kids club so the mother ship can stay strong!

Finding the Clean Air on the Airplane

Recently, I was working a flight and another flight attendant ran to first class to “breathe.” I had finished my first class service and was sitting on the jumpseat as he bombarded me. He said it’s “fartsville” in the back and it keeps on coming…I almost fell off the jump seat laughing because I’ve been there. I gave him my best shocked, stressed out emoji face and said “omg, that’s so gross.”

He went on to describe in great detail the wafts of smells that ranged from food to farts. His description was so good, I had to stop him because it went from funny to suffering for me. lol. I’m sure the people sitting in first class can let it go at their seat too but it’s rare. Probably just a numbers game, less people up front so less likely?IMG_1630One of many reasons I’d rather work the flight over being a passenger. You can leave main cabin to find the clean air if you need to. I’m sure we’ve all been there, innocently sitting in your seat on a full airplane when you get broadsided by a neighbor letting it rip. I always assume the best in people and hope that it accidentally slipped out.IMG_5499Best advice I have for finding clean air on the airplane is to secure your first class seat! Otherwise, best of luck and hope that you get some clean, nice smelling neighbors.

Happy flying

Summer Is Coming

Summer is coming. I think I speak for everyone in Oregon when I say FINALLY! The good news is that warm air and long nights are here. As we prepare for #campmommy, here are a few pics of us romping around the pearl.IMG_2049Don’t miss the drool coming out Pepper’s mouth and Blaize’s chocolate coated mouth, post Kai’s birthday cupcake. Haha! Happy girls!IMG_1677Pepper biking in the Pearl in her Elsa glory!IMG_0770So much love! Blaize going in for the gentle cheek kiss while Pepper grabs my face and kisses me hard 🙂 IMG_2180Kai reading to Blaize and Pepper. My heart is so happy. I love my littles!

Summer Reading Program Still Rocks!

So, the summer reading program kicked off yesterday and we were there to sign up! It’s our 3rd year in a row and it’s hard core this year. They have official dates when you can finish your reading to spread it out a bit more. Also, there is one grand prize of a Great Wolf Lodge trip at the end of the summer. Dear God. Kai is having a hard time understanding that only one family will win that trip and it has very little to do with how fast you read… Lol I told him I’m still recovering from our Great Wolf Lodge trip this year and planning Legoland. “The things we do for love.” IMG_2155Blaize, Kai and Pepper sorting the cookies at the library for a “cookie sale.

Twins, Keeping it Fair Daily

Pretty sure all moms feel the pressure squeeze with “keeping it fair” and “keeping it even” with multiple kids. I’m constantly trying to give special attention to each one of my 3 little peanuts. This morning, Pepper told me she was so mad at me with a tear in her eye. I asked her why and she said because I brushed Blaize’s hair first… I kept my surprise face inside, showed Pepper my straight face and told her that tomorrow she would get her hair brushed first. Gave her a big hug and voila, we were happy and smiling again!

This is a regular event with my 4 1/2 identical twin girls. Who get’s to hold mom’s hand? Who gets the first sip of water? Who gets the first bedtime song? As I navigate being a mama bear to my feisty, twin girls I want to remember that I’m not alone. Sending an air fist bump to all my mamas out there who juggle with “keeping it fair” with their littles.IMG_8567Twin Love!

Teach Resilience to our kids

When I was a little girl it was important to “be good” and that was enough. Recently, at our 4 year old pediatrician appointment the infamous Dr. Birk reminded me that resilience not just happiness is what parents should focus on. He recommended  a book to help teach resilience that I’ve read before but will read again-Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child by John Gottman.IMG_8970Blaize and Pepper sandwiching me while snuggling their giant Elsa dolls

Resilience definition: an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change

Luckily my 3 critters will probably learn resilience due to the numbers game. I’m completely outnumbered and It’s zone defense for me most of the time. Having to wait turns, share and helping each other might be a blessing in disguise.

Do I want my kids to grow up with resilience and humility? Absolutely!

Sounds so weird to say but “back in my day” I was taught to take care of myself and my siblings at a very young age. I was paid $1/hour to watch my little sister when I was 9 or 10 years old while my parents worked. Nowadays, I prefer babysitters to be in their 20’s at least. It’s a different world. And we stay with our kids a lot longer than they probably need us to. IMG_7761Getting our fresh air on while walking around in the pearl

Most of the time, I’m one of two parents downstairs at the bus top in the Pearl district with 30 other kids. It’s very safe with Chapman Elementary Kindergarten right next to the bus stop and kindergarten teachers everywhere. However, I just like walking my Kai bear down to the bus stop and waving goodbye to him.

IMG_9111So, I will continue to walk Kai downstairs to the bus stop with the 30 other kids. And plan on him learning his resilience skills from our big, little beautiful family!

“Que Sera Sera”

Endless Summer With My 3 Babes

Do you remember the Endless Summer movie? Me too. I’m having a little bit of that except mine is ensconced with 3 year old twins and a 6 year old little boy! Kai started first grade and is nailing it. Blaize and Pepper officially start part time preschool in 2 weeks and it’s gunna be something..

img_2742Recently, I caught up with a friend who reminded me that stretching ourselves in life, fitness and work is a gift. I believe this whole heartedly but loved being gently reminded. img_0669Yes, #campmommy is stretched as we choose a new, exciting activity/adventure every single day-deep into September. Yes, #campmommy is ready for bed at 8pm. Yes, I am one lucky mama every. single. day.

Living the Dream in the Pearl

Funny how life works, I’m back where I started.

I moved to Portland in 2004 from Santa Monica, CA to buy a house before I turned 30 years old. My plan was to buy a house, rent it out and keep exploring and traveling. Surprisingly, I ended up loving Portland (like everyone else) and decided to stay. I started in NW Portland at the base of Lower Mckleay park almost 12 years ago. I loved the area and felt like it was a great landing pad to “experience” Portland. I lived in Northeast Portland in my 30’s and recently relocated to the Pearl. I always thought it would be fun to live in the Pearl and enjoy the city. And here I am living in the Pearl with my 3 babydolls and enjoying the city every single day. The Pearl is shockingly kid friendly with a great playground (Field’s Park), water fountain park (Jameson Square) and even an off leash dog park.

Life is good and one surprise after another!
